Some say Mary Baxter St. Clair entered the world with a brush in her hand. Others remark that she paints with fairy dust. All are touched by her sense of wonder and marvel at her beautifully detailed paintings of wide-eyed children, ethereal angels, elusive fairies, and piquant pixies, richly dressed in brilliant colors. Born in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, into a large, creative family, the artist insists that “Fairies and angels have been part of my life since I was small and have always been very real to me.” She claims to borrow their magic in her craft, painting with such realism to create a longing in the viewer to believe her cherubs are real and caught unaware of her canvases. The artist believes that fantasy is necessary and helps us remain balanced in this all too real world. Mary Baxter St. Clair lives on the island of Kauai, where she often explores the fantastic underwater world and cheers at passing whales.
